A poem by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
I did a workshop with the amazing writer and academic Ellen Bass and came out with a load of absolute bangers. Please have a look at Ellen Bass’ website as there are some great workshops.
This one just hit me sooooooo hard. Check her out HERE as she is amazing.
Your prompt for the day
The poem is just earth shattering.
My prompt is simple.
Start your writing with:
Some girls/boys will never know the loveliness of ……………….
That could mean you are talking about ‘doing the washing up’. Or it could mean you are talking about sticking your head out a sun roof. I want you to focus in on something that is ‘lovely’ to do.
Now I want you to continue with another freewrite saying:
Some girls'/boys only know ….
this section will allow you to dig into the shoes of someone completely different. For example, some boys haven’t slept because their parents were fighting all night. Some girls barely leave the house without someone shouting something at them.
If you get stuck just keep going back to one of these prompts and write a list for ‘some girls/boys only know…’ and then see what comes out.
Enjoy!
