A Serge Takeover
This week I invited my friend Serge ♆ Neptune to share a poem. He’s given me this beautiful piece. This poem was previously published in The Lighthouse and can be found in Serge’s pamphlet These Queer Merboys

How We First Came To Land
human experience is one of
disease you wouldn’t remember us
first crawling out of water
panting for air in fierce
spasms the pain we knew
water no longer being our
mother giving up our gills
and growing porous bags to
breath swapping our one extremity
for two less silver and
more skin found refuge in
cracked lumps in the darkness
of the ground then behold -
our looks of wonder when
facing that first leap of flame
Prompt of the Day
Write a poem of transformation. You can change yourself into anyone or anything you want. Or maybe you want to change someone else, or an inanimate object, or the environment. Explore your possibilities.
What causes the transformation? Is it genetic? A curse? Does it happen regularly? Be specific.
Try if possible to ground the poem with concrete items. You can list five items you have nearby and see if they can fit in your poem.
Have fun!
