A poem to inspire you

Posting one of my own poems this week.

One of the biggest achievements of 2021 was appearing in an anthology celebrating Malika’s Poetry Kitchen.

If you don’t know, Malika’s Poetry Kitchen (aka MPK, aka Kitchen) is a writers’ collective founded in Brixton by Malika Booker and Roger Robinson in 2001. It nurtures the writing, performance and careers of poets by emphasising craft, community and development.

To celebrate an auspicious birthday they put together an amazing anthology with all the great names from across the world.

It really is a special little book and you can purchase it here -

I think this poem is one of my favourites. Not because of the words I put together but because of the story. I was asked by my partner’s father John Bruder to write this piece to read at his funeral. It all came within a few hours and every year I watch my partner plant tulips on the balcony. I loved writing it, it felt so natural and yet John never got to hear it in person. Hopefully he will always live on through this poem. As a memory, as a legacy, as a gift just like his life always was.
